Motor Vehicle Tax (MRB) in the Netherlands

Everything you need to know about Dutch road tax: how it's calculated, provincial differences, and reduced rates for electric vehicles.

How MRB is Calculated

Motor vehicle tax depends on three main factors

Vehicle Weight

The base MRB rate increases with vehicle weight. Heavier vehicles pay more tax.

Fuel Type

Diesel vehicles pay more than petrol. Electric vehicles get reduced rates in 2025. Plug-in hybrids may qualify for a reduced rate under certain conditions.

Province

Each province adds a surcharge (opcenten). This can vary by hundreds of euros per year.

Exemptions & Discounts

Electric Vehicles

In 2025, fully electric vehicles typically pay about 25% of the standard petrol MRB rate (≈75% discount).

≈75% discount (2025)

Plug-in Hybrids

May qualify for reduced rates depending on CO2 emissions.

Classic Cars

Vehicles 40+ years old may qualify for reduced rates.
