Everything you need to know about Dutch road tax: how it's calculated, provincial differences, and exemptions for electric vehicles.
Motor vehicle tax depends on three main factors
The base MRB rate increases with vehicle weight. Heavier vehicles pay more tax.
Diesel vehicles pay more than petrol. Electric vehicles are exempt. Hybrids may get reduced rates.
Each province adds a surcharge (opcenten). This can vary by hundreds of euros per year.
Fully electric vehicles pay no MRB in the Netherlands.
May qualify for reduced rates depending on CO2 emissions.
Vehicles 40+ years old may qualify for reduced rates.
