How is Dutch energy tax calculated?

Dutch energy tax (energiebelasting) is calculated based on your electricity (kWh) and gas (m³) consumption, with rates varying by consumption level and annual reductions applied.

What is the energy tax reduction in 2026?

In 2026, households receive an annual energy tax reduction of approximately €520 that is applied to lower your energy bill.

Why do I pay different rates than my neighbor?

Energy tax rates depend on consumption level and connection type. Residential customers pay standard rates, while businesses often get reduced rates. If you have solar panels with net metering, your effective electricity consumption (and tax) may be lower.

Do solar panels reduce my energy tax?

Yes. With net metering (saldering), you pay energy tax on your net grid consumption. If you generate more than you consume, you may pay very little electricity tax. You still get the annual reduction of €520.

Is energy tax the same across all Dutch provinces?

Yes, energy tax rates are set nationally. Your total energy bill can still differ by region due to other components such as network tariffs.

Can businesses get exemptions or reduced rates?

Yes, businesses often pay lower energy tax rates. For example, electricity business rates can be €0.01/kWh vs €0.09/kWh residential, and gas €0.03/m³ vs €0.60/m³. Businesses generally do not get the household reduction of €520.

What's the difference between energy tax and VAT on energy?

Energy tax is a consumption tax on the energy itself (included in the rates). VAT is then applied on your entire energy bill, including energy tax—so you pay VAT on energy tax as well.
