What municipal taxes exist in Netherlands?

Dutch municipal taxes include waste collection fees, sewage charges, water board levies, and various local taxes that vary by municipality.

Do municipal tax rates vary by city?

Yes, each of the 342 Dutch municipalities sets their own rates for local taxes, creating significant variation across the country.

What is WOZ value and why does it matter?

WOZ value is the municipality’s assessed value of a property. It can affect property-related levies such as OZB. Other municipal charges (like waste collection fees) are often fixed per household. If you enter property details, we use the relevant parts for the taxes that depend on it.

What is waste collection tax?

Waste collection tax is a municipal tax for collecting and processing household waste. The rate is usually based on the number of people in your household and is set by the municipality.

How is sewage tax calculated?

Sewage tax is levied for maintaining the sewer system and wastewater treatment. This is usually calculated per connection to the sewer, regardless of the number of residents.

What is water board tax?

Water board tax is levied by water boards for water management, dike maintenance and water purification. The rate is based on the WOZ value of your home and is determined by the water boards.

How is the water board treatment charge calculated?

Treatment charges are based on pollution units (ve): 1 unit for single-person households, 3 units for multi-person households (even just 2 people), reflecting average wastewater production. This is in addition to the WOZ-based system charge.

When do I receive the tax assessments?

Municipal tax assessments are usually sent in spring (March-May). You can often choose to pay in installments. Water board tax usually comes separately.
