What benefits can I receive in the Netherlands?

Common Dutch benefits include zorgtoeslag (healthcare), huurtoeslag (housing), kinderopvangtoeslag (childcare), and kinderbijslag (child benefit).

What income limits apply to Dutch benefits?

Income limits vary by benefit. For example, zorgtoeslag has income limits around €40,857 (single) and €51,142 (combined) in 2026. Higher incomes may still qualify for reduced benefits depending on the benefit and situation.

What is a toeslagpartner?

A toeslagpartner is someone who lives at the same address and meets certain criteria (married, registered partner, joint child, or both listed on the lease). Having a toeslagpartner affects income limits and benefit amounts.

How do I apply for Dutch benefits?

You can apply for toeslagen through the Belastingdienst (Tax Authority) website at toeslagen.nl. You need a DigiD and your BSN number. Applications can be submitted throughout the year.

What happens if my income changes during the year?

You must report income changes to the Belastingdienst immediately. Your benefit amount will be adjusted, and you may need to repay any overpayments at year-end.

Can I receive multiple benefits at once?

Yes, you can receive multiple toeslagen simultaneously if you meet the criteria for each.

What is the asset limit for toeslagen?

Most toeslagen have asset limits. For 2026, huurtoeslag asset limits are €38,479 (single) and €76,958 (couple). Zorgtoeslag asset limits are €146,011 (single) and €184,633 (couple). Exceeding these limits can disqualify you.

Are expats eligible for Dutch benefits?

Yes, expats legally residing in the Netherlands with a valid residence permit and BSN are generally eligible for toeslagen if they meet income and other requirements.
